Annual Report 2021/2022

35 years of IngCH and forging ahead

For the past 35 years, we have been getting young people excited about technology and IT. We’ve sparked their interest in a career in engineering and in the MINT sector (mathematics, IT, natural sciences and technology) and put them in direct contact with apprentices, students, professionals and experts in the field. At the same time, we use a range of activities to raise awareness among the public about the importance of technology and IT in business, society and the environment, and to enhance the image of the engineering profession in the public domain.

Talent development

Promoting young talent is something we are passionate about. Opening a door to unexplored worlds for young people, giving them fresh insights and making them aware of different career and study routes – we firmly believe that direct contact with young people in our various projects is worth the effort.

But promoting young talent is not a solo effort – it only works through close collaboration with our member companies, businesses, universities, universities of applied sciences, other educational institutions, and numerous speakers and workshop facilitators. We want to take this opportunity to thank all those involved who work alongside us to promote young talent.

The Technology and IT Weeks are IngCH’s largest and most important project. The direct exchange between companies, research institutes and universities and secondary school students, who are in the process of deciding what to study, is an enriching experience for all.

Our Meitli Technology Days encourage more girls to think about vocational training in technical areas. After a long break due to the pandemic, we kicked things off again in 2021/2022 with seven days at three different companies. Almost 150 girls got a taste of what technology is all about during the one- or two-day programmes.

The MINT service centre for secondary and vocational schools was established in 2015 by IngCH and Swissmem. If they have any questions about the MINT fields (mathematics, IT, natural sciences and technology), the schools have access to an advice centre that evaluates the most suitable services for the specific and individual needs of the institution in question.

With 13,000 pupils involved, ‘Achtung Technik Los!’ is a IngCH project with a wide reach. For 12 years now, the project has been inspiring young people to opt for vocational training in technical and ICT fields when contemplating their careers. This autumn will see us celebrate our 100th action day!

Training & Events

ETH-Industry Dialogue on the Future

The ETH Industry Dialogue on the Future is organised annually by IngCH in close cooperation with EPFL and ETH Zurich. The Advisory Board, chaired by ETH Zurich President Joël Mesot, decides which topic the dialogue is dedicated to. The event sees industry decision-makers discussing the topics of the day with professors from ETH Zurich and EPFL.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel the 2021 event at short notice due to the coronavirus situation.

The 20th ETH Industry Dialogue on the Future will take place on 2 December 2022 at the Nestlé Research Center in Lausanne, under the heading «The Net Zero Emissions Challenge».

Many thanks to Nestlé for hosting!

Members’ event and General Meeting

Twice a year, IngCH members meet to hear from the Executive Board and agency about the association’s activities. In a departure from the norm, the General Meeting in August did not take place at a company. It was instead held at PH Zurich and ‘Loft Five’. But the chance to convene face to face again was still greatly welcomed. In March 2022, we got the chance to drill dental implants ourselves while visiting Straumann, where we learned more about this exciting company in the dental sector.

Training for career advisors

In October 2021, around 30 career advisors visited Siemens in Zug to find out which jobs are in demand at Siemens, where and how innovation is created, and which cultural aspects employees find important. The People & Organisation team provided insights into the recruitment, professional development and support for their employees and answered probing questions posed by the visitors.

Collaborations

We collaborate with a large number of players who pursue common objectives. These include:

IT-Feuer brings together key players involved in promoting young talent in the IT sector. The initiative develops role models from the sector and informs teachers about the extensive range of opportunities available for promoting young IT talent. It focuses on women in particular, who unfortunately are still heavily under-represented. IngCH is one of the sponsor organisations.

The WRO is a global competition for young people who are enthusiastic about technology, combining sporting thrills with scholastic challenges. Young people design and build a LEGO MINDSTORMS robot, program it and use it to take on other teams in an exciting competition. Guido Santner, Project Manager of the Technik- und Informatikwochen, was a member of the jury once again.

The SVIN is a Swiss association that serves as a versatile platform for exchanging experiences and networking for female engineers and women in general in scientific and technical professions and companies. Since its founding in 1991, the SVIN has advocated for the concerns of women in the engineering profession and worked to get young women motivated for a career as an engineer. Today, the professional association has around 300 members and 43 supporting members, companies and educational institutions.

In the past financial year, we also supported the Informatiktage in Zurich and Engineers’ Day.

Generating enthusiasm for the engineering profession – the IngCH organisation

Representatives from different sectors strategically manage the association with the President – many of them having done so for many years. The dialogue with and input from the Board members are extremely valued by the agency.
